Key Spring 2024 Dates

  • January 12: Registration Closes
  • January 20: Player Evaluations
  • Week of January 28: Practices may begin
  • March 2-3: Opening Day

Games

Teams typically play two (2) games per week on Thursday and Saturday.  Some games could occur on other days in the case of makeup games, games held outside of our park, or league playoffs. For those selected to play All-Stars, practices will begin in May and games will be played throughout the month of June.

Practice

Prior to the start of the season, teams typically practice two (2) times per week.  Those practices may occur on a weeknight or on the weekend. Once the season begins, teams typically practice only once per week.

Locations

Most games and practices will be played at the Liberty Park Softball Complex. Other locations for practices and games could include Cahaba Heights, Wald Park and Pizitz Middle School.  Older age groups (10U and 12U) will travel locally to compete against teams from other leagues in the area.

Age Divisions

Our age divisions are not based on the school grade of your player.  USA Softball recently changed its divisions, so age divisions are now based on the age your player is on September 1, 2023.  Age divisions for this year are as follows:

  • 6U (September 2016 – August 2018)
  • 8U (September 2014 – August 2016)
  • 10U (September 2012 – August 2014)
  • 12U (September 2010 – August 2012)

All registrants should register their player in the correct age group. Email VHGSoftball@gmail.com with any specific requests following the submission of your registration. The VHGSA board of directors will make final decisions on all age division change requests prior to the player drafts, and parents / guardians will be contacted.

Equipment

The league provides a jersey, socks, and belt for each 8U-12U player.  6U players wear shorts and will not receive a belt.  Each player is responsible for providing her own bat, glove, cleats, pants, face mask, and batting helmet with face guard.

Coaches

Any parent who is interested in serving as a head coach or assistant coach should indicate his or her interest on the registration form. Those individuals who are selected to be a head coach will be contacted by the league prior to evaluations.

Competitive Play League

Players interested in learning more about competitive opportunities can try out for the Competitive Play League (or CPL). This requires a tryout of current rec players and these teams will participate in 2-3 weekend tournaments on top of regular season games. If you are interested in learning more, be sure to make this selection in the registration process and you will receive more information following registration.
